FAQ
Questions we get asked
What are your opening hours?
The Oxbow is open Thursday–Saturday, 4–8pm. We’re a small, independent restaurant, so always check our social pages for holiday hours or special closures before making the trip.
Do you take reservations?
For groups of 8 or more, we offer a limited number of reservations each night. Otherwise, The Oxbow is first come, first served. Join the queue, order at the counter, grab a seat and settle in!
Do you really sell out?
We do! Everything is prepared fresh and in limited quantities, and on busy nights some dishes — including our fish & chips — can sell out before closing. Come early if there’s something you’ve got your heart set on.
Why is there sometimes a queue?
Because apparently South Carolina really likes British fish & chips! We have a small kitchen and cook everything fresh to order, so busy nights can mean a queue. We promise we’re moving as quickly as our little kitchen allows.
How does ordering work?
We’re casual counter service. Place your order at the counter, find yourself a seat and we’ll take it from there. No white tablecloths, no fuss — just proper food and good company.
How long should I expect to wait for my food?
Everything is cooked fresh to order, so during peak periods there can be a wait. Our fish is battered and fried when you order it — we’d rather make you something brilliant than something that’s been sitting under a heat lamp.
What makes your fish & chips “proper” British fish & chips?
Fresh Atlantic cod, a light crispy batter, chunky chips, homemade tartar sauce and all the British extras — including mushy peas, malt vinegar and curry sauce. British food done proper.
Is your fish fresh or frozen?
Our Atlantic cod is fresh, never frozen, and delivered specifically for our service days.
Is everything made from scratch?
Pretty much! Our tiny team spends the hours outside service prepping, baking, smoking, mixing, chopping and creating. From sauces and desserts to pies and smoked fish spread, we make as much as we possibly can right here at The Oxbow.
Do you serve anything besides fish & chips?
Absolutely. Our menu is intentionally small and changes regularly, with rotating British-inspired pies, starters, mains and desserts alongside our legendary fish & chips. Check our weekly lineup on social media to see what Chef Ray has been up to.
Do you have gluten-free fish & chips?
We can prepare gluten-free battered fish with advance notice. Please contact us at least a day ahead so our kitchen can be prepared for you.
Do you have vegetarian options?
We rarely have vegetarian options, as our menu is so small and limited. You can always call and ask to see if we have any vegetarian options the week of your visit or coming up.
Can you accommodate food allergies?
Please tell us about any allergies before ordering. We’ll always be honest about what we can safely accommodate, but because we operate from a small kitchen, cross-contact may be possible.
Is The Oxbow family-friendly?
Very much so! Families are welcome. We’re casual, relaxed and definitely not the sort of place where anyone needs to worry about which fork to use.
Do you have a kids’ menu?
We do have a small kiddos menu as well as many of our dishes are great for sharing with smaller appetites.
Can I order food to-go?
Yes! Our menu is available for takeaway during regular service, subject to availability. Just remember — fresh fish & chips are always at their absolute best straight from the fryer.
Where can we sit?
We have seating throughout The Oxbow, including our upstairs dining areas and outdoor/riverside spaces. Seating is first come, first served unless you have one of our limited large-party reservations.
Do you have a bar/serve alcoholic beverages?
We do! Grab a beer, cider, wine or one of our rotating specialty bevvies. And yes, there are usually a few distinctly British choices in the mix.
Why is your menu so small?
On purpose. We’d rather do a handful of things really well than offer pages and pages of food. Our menu changes regularly, everything is made in limited quantities, and when it’s gone… it’s gone.
Who are the people behind The Oxbow?
That would be Ray & Alyssa — the Brit and the American. Chef Ray brings the British food, Alyssa keeps the whole circus moving, and together we created The Oxbow as a place for proper food, good company and a little taste of Britain right here in South Carolina. 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸
